A dry fix roof system is the method of mechanically fixing ridge tiles and verges to a roof without the use of mortar. Instead of mortar dry fix systems are fixed to the roof using plastic unions, clips, clamps, screws and washers. This makes for a maintance free roof that is wind and waterproof. The unions secure the tiles together with a small expansion gap while the clamps are placed between tiles and screwed down into ridge board or batten. This fixing will ensure no tiles come loose over time, accounting for natural expansion, contraction or any other type of roof movement. Fitting a dry fix system can be done regardless of what the weather is doing at the time.
The edge of a pitched roof as it meets the gable end is called a verge. Dry verge caps are usually made of plastic, which in itself offers some distinct advantages. The most obvious advantage is plastic’s durability; plastic verge caps should last you at least 10 years and require a fraction (if any) of the maintenance associated with mortar.
The dry ridge system simply involves fixing ridge and hip tiles to a roof without sand or cement mortar, but instead with screws and clamps, which fix each ridge tile to the roof, with waterproof unions beneath the screws to divert water away from the joint.
Roof “valleys” are the areas on your roof where the slopes meet, forming a V angle where water usually runs off. These areas are usually the most problem-prone areas of the roof. Making it a Dry Fix Valley will keep this area maintance and problem free for over 10 years.
